Stockholm travel tips that actually help

Before you start the tour

  • Currency: Swedish Krona (SEK). Roughly 10–11 SEK = US$1. Sweden is largely cashless — credit and debit cards are accepted everywhere, and many places don't accept cash at all.
  • Get an SL Travel Card. The reloadable SL card (or the SL app) covers metro, buses, trams and ferries. A 24-hour pass is around 165 SEK; a 72-hour pass around 330 SEK. Single tickets cost 39 SEK and last 75 minutes.
  • The Tunnelbana (metro) is excellent. Clean, fast, fully English-signed and famous for its art-installation stations. Most of our 17 attractions are within a 10-minute walk of a metro stop.
  • Best time to visit: May–September — long days (up to 18+ hours of daylight in midsummer), mild weather and the city at its most photogenic. Winter is magical too, but daylight collapses to about 6 hours.
  • Dress for layered weather. Even in summer, evenings cool quickly. A light waterproof jacket is sensible year-round; sturdy walking shoes are essential for cobblestone Old Town.
  • Old Town (Gamla Stan): Go early morning before the cruise crowds arrive (~10:30 AM), or after 6 PM when day-trippers leave. The cobblestones empty and the colours soften beautifully.
  • Stortorget: The colourful houses are most photogenic in soft afternoon light. Pair a visit with a fika (coffee + cinnamon bun) at one of the cafés on the square.
  • Mårten Trotzigs gränd: Easy to miss. Look for the narrow opening between Västerlånggatan and Prästgatan in Gamla Stan — at 90 cm wide, it's literally the width of a person.
  • Rosendals Trädgård: Take the ferry from Slussen or Nybroplan to Djurgården — far more pleasant than the bus. The garden café's wood-fired bread and biodynamic salads are worth the trip alone.
  • Food to try: Köttbullar (Swedish meatballs), gravlax, herring (sill), cinnamon buns (kanelbullar) and the institution of fika — a coffee break with a sweet, taken seriously by every Stockholmer.
  • Water: Tap water is excellent quality — bring a refillable bottle. Free refills at most cafés and museums.
  • Tipping is not expected. Service is included in restaurant bills. Round up if you wish, but don't feel obligated. Don't tip taxis.
  • Free WiFi is widespread in cafés, libraries, the Tunnelbana and most public spaces. You'll rarely need mobile data, but a small Swedish or EU SIM helps for streaming our audio guides outdoors.
  • Alcohol is sold only at government Systembolaget stores (closed Sundays in many locations) — not in supermarkets. Bars and restaurants serve normally.
  • Safety: Stockholm is one of Europe's safest capitals. Walk anywhere day or night. Standard precautions against pickpockets in tourist crowds — that's it.

What recent explorers say

★★★★★

Perfect way to see Stockholm

"This audio tour was exactly what we needed. We're a couple who likes to explore at our own pace, and the flexibility to linger at Gamla Stan while quickly moving through areas that didn't interest us was perfect. The stories about the Stockholm Bloodbath at Stortorget were chilling. We completed the tour over two days and appreciated being able to take breaks whenever we wanted."

— Jennifer & Mark, United States
★★★★★

Incredible value & content quality

"As a solo traveller on a budget, this audio tour was a lifesaver. At a fraction of the cost of guided tours I got professional information about 17 attractions. The audio at Stockholm Central Station revealed secrets I never would have noticed on my own. Being able to pause, replay and go at my own pace made it so much better than fighting for position in a tour group."

— Hiroshi, Japan
★★★★★

Family-friendly and educational

"We used this with three children (8, 11, 14) and it was fantastic. Being able to pause for bathroom breaks, snacks and ice cream without holding up a group was essential. The audio was interesting enough to keep our 14-year-old engaged while accessible for our 8-year-old. The Stockholm City Library audio was fascinating — even the kids loved Asplund's circular reading room."

— The Morrison Family, United Kingdom
★★★★★

Best for photographers

"As a photography hobbyist I needed flexibility to capture Stockholm's beauty at the right moments. I waited for golden hour at Strandvägen Boulevard, returned to Monteliusvägen for sunset, and spent extra time framing shots in Old Town without worrying about a group. The audio guides gave me great context for my photos and helped me find unique perspectives."

— Carlos, Spain
★★★★★

Exceeded expectations for history lovers

"The depth of historical information was impressive — far more than we expected from an audio tour. Learning about the secret passages in Old Town, the architectural symbolism at Sofia kyrka and the political intrigue at S:t Jacobs Kyrka brought Stockholm's history to life. Being able to replay sections helped us absorb complex information. Scholarly content delivered in an engaging, accessible format."

— Margaret & Thomas, Canada
★★★★★

Perfect for senior travellers

"At 68 and 71 we can't keep up with fast-paced group tours. We could rest on benches whenever needed, take our time walking between attractions and never felt rushed. The audio was crystal clear (my husband has slight hearing loss and had no problems). We spread the tour over three days, which was perfect for our energy levels."

— Dorothy & Harold, Australia
★★★★★

Introvert's dream tour

"As someone who finds large tour groups exhausting, this was my perfect Stockholm experience. I could explore privately without forced social interaction. The audio quality was excellent, the narrator had a pleasant voice and the content was fascinating. I felt like I had a knowledgeable friend showing me around rather than being part of a herd of tourists."

— Sven, Germany
★★★★★

Saved our rainy Stockholm day

"We bought this tour while already in Stockholm when rain threatened to ruin our day. Within minutes we had the PDF and were listening to our first audio guide. The instant access saved our day. We ducked in and out of attractions between showers, listened to some audio while sheltering in cafés, and still managed to see everything we wanted. The flexibility was crucial."

— Emma & Lucas, Netherlands
