Discover Budapest Your Way

Budapest is a city of two souls — the hills of ancient Buda and the vibrant boulevards of Pest, united by the iconic Chain Bridge and the silver thread of the Danube. Grand thermal baths steam beside neo-Gothic parliament spires; ruin bars pulse in the ornate courtyards of the old Jewish Quarter; and everywhere, the weight of a thousand years of Magyar history hangs beautifully in the air.

Uvamai's self-guided audio tour lets you absorb all 24 of Budapest's most essential landmarks — royal castles, solemn war memorials, art nouveau opera houses, and leafy island escapes — at exactly the pace that suits you. No group to keep up with. No timetable. Just you, your headphones, and the best stories Budapest has to tell.

24 Iconic Attractions Covered

Your audio guide covers 24 of Budapest's greatest landmarks — from the grand railway stations that bookend the city to the hilltop citadels, royal palaces, solemn memorials, and thermal oases that make Budapest truly unforgettable.

1
Budapest-Keleti Railway Station
🚂 Iconic Gateway

Your journey begins at Budapest's grand Eastern Railway Station, a magnificent neo-Renaissance masterpiece opened in 1884. More than a transport hub, Keleti is a monument to 19th-century Hungarian ambition — its soaring iron-and-glass facade and ornate royal waiting rooms announce that you have arrived somewhere extraordinary.

2
Anantara New York Palace Budapest
☕ Legendary Belle Époque

Once hailed as the most beautiful café in the world, the 1894 New York Palace is a dazzling blend of Renaissance, Baroque, and Eclectic architecture. Its gilded interior nurtured generations of Budapest's writers, poets, and thinkers — and today it remains one of the city's most breathtaking spaces.

3
Nagy Zsinagóga — Great Synagogue
✡️ Europe's Largest Synagogue

Built in 1859 in Moorish Revival style, the Great Synagogue on Dohány Street is the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world. Its twin onion-domed towers and richly decorated interior stand as a proud monument to Budapest's vibrant Jewish heritage, and a powerful reminder of the community that has shaped this city for centuries.

4
Holocaust Memorial Center
🕯️ Memorial & Museum

A solemn and deeply moving museum dedicated to the memory of Hungarian Holocaust victims. Its striking inverted synagogue architecture — a building designed to seem on the verge of collapse — is itself a powerful statement. The exhibitions document the fate of over 550,000 Hungarian Jews with unflinching honesty and profound respect.

5
Central Market Hall
🛒 Hungarian Gastronomy

Budapest's largest and oldest covered market, the Nagy Vásárcsarnok dates from 1897 and enchants with its soaring neo-Gothic facade and brilliant Zsolnay tile roof. Inside, stalls overflow with paprika, salami, túrós rétes, and folk embroideries — a sensory feast and the perfect introduction to Hungarian food culture.

6
Liberty Bridge
🌉 Art Nouveau Icon

The Szabadság híd is Budapest's most beautiful and beloved bridge — a slender Art Nouveau iron span from 1896, painted in signature green and crowned with mythical turul birds, ancient symbols of the Magyar nation. At just 333 metres, it's the shortest of the Danube bridges and the most photogenic, especially at dusk.

7
Citadella
🏰 Hilltop Fortress

Perched atop Gellért Hill, the Citadella fortress was built by the Habsburgs after the failed 1848 Hungarian Revolution — a deliberate symbol of imperial control. Today it offers Budapest's most spectacular panoramic views: the full sweep of the Danube, both halves of the city, and the surrounding green hills stretching to the horizon.

8
Hungarian National Gallery
🎨 Fine Art & Heritage

Housed within the magnificent wings of Buda Castle, Hungary's premier fine arts museum holds thousands of works spanning medieval stone carvings, Gothic altarpieces, Baroque paintings, and the masterpieces of modern Hungarian art. An essential journey through the nation's visual imagination from the 12th century to today.

9
Buda Castle
👑 UNESCO World Heritage

The great royal palace of the Hungarian kings crowns Castle Hill above the Danube in a sprawling complex of courtyards, towers, and baroque facades. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Buda Castle has witnessed nearly 700 years of Magyar history — from medieval grandeur through Ottoman conquest, Habsburg reconstruction, and the devastation of World War II.

10
Budapest Western Railway Station (Nyugati)
🏛️ Iron & Glass Marvel

Designed by the Eiffel Company of Paris and completed in 1877, the Nyugati Station is one of Europe's oldest and most spectacular railway terminals. Its extraordinary iron-and-glass main hall — a direct forerunner of Paris's famous iron architecture — has graced Pest's Grand Boulevard for nearly 150 years.

11
Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum
⚔️ Hidden History

Carved deep into the limestone heart of Castle Hill, this secret hospital was built in the 1930s and operated as a covert WWII field hospital and later a Cold War nuclear bunker. One of Budapest's most extraordinary museums, its wax figure displays and original equipment bring the city's wartime underground life vividly to light.

12
Matthias Church
⛪ Gothic Crown Jewel

The Mátyás-templom in the heart of the Castle District is Budapest's most ornate medieval church, renowned for its extraordinary diamond-patterned Zsolnay tile roof in jewel-bright colours. Originally built in the 14th century, it has hosted the coronations of Habsburg kings and queens, and its richly frescoed interior remains one of Hungary's most beautiful interiors.

13
Statue of St. Stephen
👑 Founding King

The imposing equestrian statue of Hungary's first Christian king, István I — canonised as St. Stephen — stands at the heart of Fisherman's Bastion, gazing out over the city he helped forge a millennium ago. Erected in 1906, it remains one of Budapest's most beloved national symbols and an essential stop on any Castle Hill walk.

14
Shoes on the Danube Bank
🕊️ Moving Memorial

Sixty pairs of period cast-iron shoes line the Danube embankment in one of Budapest's most haunting and heartbreaking memorials. They mark the spot where Arrow Cross militiamen shot thousands of Jewish men, women, and children into the river in the winter of 1944–45. An essential and sobering stop on any visit to Budapest.

15
Budapest Eye (Ferris Wheel)
🎡 City Panorama

The Budapest Eye is a 65-metre observation wheel beside Erzsébet Square, offering sweeping 360-degree views of the city's rooftops, the winding Danube, and the hills of Buda. A romantic and playful vantage point that gives you an entirely new perspective on the twin cities spread out below.

16
Hungarian State Opera House
🎭 World-Class Architecture

Arguably the most beautiful opera house in Central Europe, the Magyar Állami Operaház was designed by Miklós Ybl and completed in 1884. Its neo-Renaissance exterior is magnificent — but the interior, swathed in silk, gold leaf, Carrara marble, and allegorical frescoes, is genuinely breathtaking. Franz Joseph I himself declared it more beautiful than the Vienna Opera.

17
House of Terror Museum
📜 20th-Century History

The Terror Háza occupies the former headquarters of Hungary's two totalitarian terror organisations — first the Nazi Arrow Cross, then the communist ÁVH secret police. Its unflinching exhibitions document decades of oppression, torture, and resistance in one of Europe's most powerful and emotionally charged historical museums.

18
Vajdahunyad Castle
🏰 Fairytale Architecture

Built for Hungary's 1896 Millennial Exhibition in City Park, Vajdahunyad Castle is a romantic architectural fantasy — a single complex that weaves together Romanesque chapels, Gothic towers, Renaissance loggias, and Baroque facades to showcase the breadth of historic Hungarian architecture. Set beside a mirror-still lake, it looks like a scene from a fairy tale.

19
Anonymus Szobor
🖋️ Medieval Chronicler

The cloaked, faceless bronze statue of the medieval chronicler known only as Anonymous has guarded the entrance to Vajdahunyad Castle since 1903. The identity of this royal notary — who chronicled the earliest history of the Magyar conquest — remains a mystery to this day. Legend holds that touching the pen in his hand brings writers good fortune.

20
Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden
🦁 Since 1866

One of the world's oldest zoological gardens, Budapest Zoo was established in 1866 and today houses over 1,000 animal species amid beautiful Art Nouveau buildings and lush botanical gardens in City Park. Its extraordinary elephant house, palm house, and great ape villa are architectural treasures in their own right.

21
Margaret Island
🌿 Green Oasis

This peaceful 2.5-kilometre island sanctuary sits in the middle of the Danube, beloved by Budapest residents as a place of rest and recreation. Margaret Island is home to thermal spring pools, the ruins of a 13th-century Dominican convent, a famous musical fountain, rose gardens, and shaded walking paths — the city's most beautiful green escape.

22
Fisherman's Bastion
🗼 Panoramic Viewpoint

The neo-Romanesque Halászbástya is Budapest's most photographed landmark — a fairy-tale terrace of seven white towers built between 1895 and 1902, each representing one of the seven Magyar chieftains who founded Hungary in 895. Its elevated position above the Danube offers the definitive postcard view of the Hungarian Parliament across the river.

23
Heroes' Square
🏛️ National Monument

Hungary's grandest public space was created for the nation's Millennial celebrations in 1896. The Hősök tere is dominated by the soaring 36-metre Millennium Memorial column, flanked by two sweeping colonnades bearing statues of Hungary's greatest kings and leaders. It remains the ceremonial heart of Budapest and a defining expression of Magyar national pride.

24
Széchenyi Thermal Baths
♨️ Quintessential Budapest

Budapest's largest and most famous thermal bath complex sits in City Park inside a magnificent neo-Baroque palace built in 1913. Natural hot spring water at up to 74°C rises from deep underground, filling three outdoor pools and fifteen indoor pools. Széchenyi is not merely a bath — it is a quintessential Budapest institution and one of Europe's great spa experiences.

Budapest Travel Tips

  • Best time to visit: Spring (April–May) and early autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather, golden light, and smaller crowds. July–August is peak season — beautiful but very busy.
  • Getting around: Budapest's metro, trams, and buses are excellent and affordable. Tram 2 along the Danube is one of Europe's most scenic tram routes. A 24-hour or 72-hour travel card offers great value.
  • Currency: Hungary uses the Hungarian Forint (HUF), not the Euro. ATMs are widely available throughout the city — avoid airport currency exchange desks, which offer poor rates.
  • Thermal baths: Arrive early at Széchenyi or Gellért Baths — they become very crowded by late morning. Bring a towel or rent one on-site. Weekday mornings are far quieter than weekends.
  • Castle Hill: Take the historic Sikló funicular from the base of Chain Bridge — it's a wonderful experience and saves the steep uphill walk. Early morning visits to Fisherman's Bastion are magical, before the crowds arrive.
  • Language: Hungarian is one of the world's most unusual languages, but English is widely spoken in all tourist areas. Learning "köszönöm" (thank you) always earns a smile from locals.
  • Ruin bars: Budapest's famous ruin bars occupy the ornate ruined courtyards of the old VII District Jewish Quarter. Szimpla Kert is the original and most iconic — even daytime visits are worthwhile for the atmosphere.
  • Parliament views: The best view of the Hungarian Parliament is from the Buda side of the Danube — Fisherman's Bastion and the Castle District offer the iconic perspective. At night, the parliament's golden dome reflected in the river is extraordinary.
