20 Attractions with Audio Guides
Every stop comes with expert narration revealing history, hidden details, and stories most visitors never hear. Audio durations shown are approximate — actual length may vary slightly depending on your selected language.
Step inside the Second Empire railway station that quietly turned a modest fishing village into the playground of European royalty. Your audio guide uncovers the ornate ironwork rising above the platforms, the private waiting rooms once reserved for visiting monarchs, and the roll call of aristocrats and film stars who arrived here chasing Riviera sunshine. Discover why this unassuming transport hub became the gateway to the Belle Époque, and how its arrival reshaped Nice's entire economy and identity.
Marvel at the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral outside Russia, its six gilded onion domes rising above pink granite walls. Consecrated in 1912 in memory of a young Tsarevich who died in Nice, the cathedral was built by exiled Russian nobility determined to keep their faith and heritage alive far from home. Your audio guide reveals the hand-painted icons inside, the bells cast in Russia, and the poignant stories of émigrés who found sanctuary on the French Riviera.
Stand before a Gothic Revival giant, its twin towers rivalling anything found in northern France, raised between 1864 and 1879. Inside, Mediterranean light pours through stained glass onto artwork by local masters, while your audio guide explains the engineering challenge of building something so ambitious on notoriously unstable Niçois ground. Discover why this basilica became a statement of civic pride during Nice's rapid 19th-century growth.
Walk into the beating heart of Nice, where Turin-inspired arcades meet a bold French chequerboard pavement laid across former marshland in the 1840s. Your audio guide explains the hidden meaning behind the black-and-white paving, the dancing fountains that punctuate the square, and the tramway gliding silently beneath your feet. Learn how this square became a symbol of Nice's dual Italian-French identity.
Follow a 1.2-kilometre ribbon of green laid in 2013 over a long-buried river, where mist fountains are programmed to the seasons and Mediterranean planting softens the modern city. Your audio guide draws the line between this contemporary park and the Roman aqueducts and Belle Époque gardens that inspired its design. Discover how three thousand years of memory were layered beneath a single afternoon stroll.
Encounter seven bronze figures by sculptor Jaume Plensa, encircling Apollo at the heart of Place Masséna. Your audio guide explains how their positions cast shadows marking significant dates in Niçois history, and how the choreographed water draws on ancient solar mythology. Discover why locals once protested this fountain fiercely — and why most have long since come around.
Wander Nice's oldest public garden, opened in 1862 and home to more than 140 Mediterranean plant species. Your audio guide points out ancient olive trees, exotic palms collected by Belle Époque botanists, and a sundial engineered with real astronomical precision. Discover how this garden once served as the social stage where European royalty took their Riviera air.
Trace seven kilometres of the world's most famous seafront, built in the 1820s and paid for by English residents who wanted a proper place to walk. Your audio guide reveals the story behind the iconic blue chairs, the strategically planted palms lining the bay, and the concealed wartime bunkers hidden beneath the pavement. Discover why this promenade remains the single most photographed stretch of the French Riviera.
Step into Nice's most sensory marketplace, trading continuously since the 1800s. Your audio guide introduces the flower vendors who speak an almost secret trade language, the blooms grown in hidden inland valleys, and the daily transformation from morning market to evening dining terrace. Discover the baroque buildings ringing the square and the three centuries of stories they've witnessed.
Duck into a 17th-century neighbourhood church devoted to the saint of impossible causes, where trompe-l'œil paintings stretch the ceiling into false depth. Your audio guide explains the hidden chapel where locals tuck handwritten prayers, and the ancient bell-ringing patterns that once told the quarter whether a wedding, a death, or a feast day was underway. Discover a corner of Nice that tourists routinely walk straight past.
Enter Nice's baroque cathedral, built in the 1650s beneath a glazed-tile dome that still defines the city skyline. Your audio guide tells the dramatic legend of a fifteen-year-old martyr said to have arrived in Nice carried by angels, alongside the baroque artwork inside and a crypt resting on Roman foundations. Discover how faith, myth, and two thousand years of history sit stacked beneath one dome.
Lose yourself in a medieval labyrinth largely unchanged since the 14th century, its narrow streets engineered for natural ventilation long before air conditioning existed. Your audio guide points out façades coloured by ancient ordinance, courtyards only locals know, and artisan workshops still practising trades passed down through generations. Discover Vieux Nice the way a local would show a close friend, not a tour group.
Climb to Nice's ancient acropolis, inhabited for two thousand years by Greeks, Romans, and medieval lords alike. Your audio guide recounts the 1705 siege ordered by Louis XIV that left only ruins standing, reveals the artificial waterfall concealing a seawater pump, and explains the 19th-century landscaping designed for the perfect sunset view. Discover why the panorama over the Baie des Anges from here remains unmatched anywhere in Nice.
Pause at a solemn First World War memorial whose sight lines connect deliberately to other significant points across the city. Your audio guide explains the symbolic plantings, the bronze plaques carrying personal stories of the fallen, and the annual ceremonies that keep their memory alive. Discover a space designed for quiet contemplation rather than spectacle.
Enter Nice's most historically charged square, dedicated to the man who unified Italy and who was born just streets away. Your audio guide walks you through the strict 1780s architectural code behind the yellow neoclassical façades, the central statue aligned with astronomical phenomena, and the cafés founded by the Italian immigrants who shaped this corner of the city. Discover how one square captures Nice's complicated Franco-Italian identity.
Stand before a thirty-metre cubic head sculpted by Sacha Sosno in 2002 — still Nice's most argued-about landmark. Your audio guide explains how the city's central library operates inside, reading in geometric daylight, and how locals who once protested the sculpture now point to it with quiet pride. Discover a case study in how bold public art can reshape a city's sense of itself.
Climb to a star-shaped Renaissance fortress built between 1557 and 1560 to repel Ottoman raids along the coast. Your audio guide reveals hidden chambers, escape passages, and rainwater cisterns engineered for long sieges, all still intact within the original walls. Discover why the entire Côte d'Azur unfolds below these ramparts like a living map.
Visit a 1933 modernist church dedicated to France's patron saint, its clean bell tower daring to stand beside centuries of baroque neighbours. Your audio guide explains how the stained glass filters Mediterranean light into a space built for prayer, and how local materials shape the altar within. Discover how 20th-century Nice found its own architectural voice.
Wander terraced monastery gardens tended by Franciscan monks since the 16th century, where ancient olive trees shade meditative seating. Your audio guide reveals the symbolism behind the plant choices, the herb beds that once supplied medieval medicine, and an irrigation system engineered to capture every drop of Mediterranean rain. Discover a quieter, older side of Nice, high above the seafront crowds.
Complete your journey at an active Franciscan monastery built on the site of Roman ruins, where five unbroken centuries of devotion meet baroque altarpieces and manuscript libraries. Your audio guide explains how the cloisters were built to harmonise human proportion with the natural world, offering a final, contemplative note to end your Nice tour. Discover why this hilltop sanctuary feels a world away from the Promenade des Anglais below.

Nice Travel Tips
Insider advice to make the most of your Nice visit.
April–May and September–October are the sweet spot: warm sun, milder crowds, gardens in bloom. July–August is glorious but very busy. February brings Nice's famous Carnival.
The tram is modern, quiet and cheap — around €1.50 a ride. Lines T1, T2 and T3 cover most of the city, and T2 links the airport straight to the Old Town.
Euro (€). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but keep a little cash for the Cours Saleya flower and food market. ATMs are common throughout the centre.
Sun is the default, but pack comfortable shoes — Vieux Nice is cobbled and Colline du Château involves steps (a small lift on Rue des Ponchettes helps tired knees). Light layers work best most of the year.
"Bonjour" opens every door in Nice. "Merci", "Pardon" and "L'addition, s'il vous plaît" cover most of the day. English is common in tourist zones, less so up in residential Cimiez.
Try socca, a real salade niçoise (no potatoes, despite what you'll see elsewhere), pissaladière, and a glass of cool Côtes-de-Provence rosé. Lunch runs 12–2pm, dinner from 7:30pm.
